Important Information Regarding IRS Tax Information
For Your Information: It is expected that the Department of
Education will verify tax information with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service
(IRS). While this IRS database match has been discussed over the past several
years, the financial aid community has been encouraged families to be prepared
for implementation.
An IRS database match means that the amounts listed for earned income,
adjusted gross income, taxes paid and/or other tax line items that you and your
parents provided on the FAFSA will be cross-checked with the IRS for:
- Actual income earned as found on W-2 submitted to the IRS directly from
employers.
- AGI as found on IRS tax form.
- Tax paid as found on IRS tax form.
- Earned Income Credit, Interest Income, etc.
If the FAFSA items do not match with the IRS data, even completed, awarded
files will be thrown in a “rejected” status until the student provides the
Financial Aid Office with documentation to make a correction. No awards will be
available until the Financial Aid Office re-determines if a student is actually
eligible for funding.
You must ensure that all information you provide is accurate and complete:
If the FAFSA is submitted with estimated tax and income information to meet the
March 2, 2008 priority deadline, then you are required to update the information after
you have completed your 2007 taxes, regardless of requested verification from the Financial Aid Office
at your college or university.
