STUDENT SUCCESS IN THE LIBRARY

LIBRARIAN/INSTRUCTIONAL FACULTY COLLABORATION

Researching a topic can be very daunting for many students. Your assignment may be the first that requires the use of electronic databases and the Library of Congress system of organizing material. In order to ensure a positive experience for your students, the librarians at Chabot are happy to collaborate with you in the following ways:

  1. Preparation of Assignments:
  2. As early in the semester as possible, contact any of the librarians to set up an appointment to discuss your assignments and perhaps suggest ways to tailor the assignment to further enrich the students’ exploration of a topic. Also, we can ensure that sufficient resources are in the collection to support your student’s research needs. Perhaps certain items could be put on reserve. Maybe a handout could be prepared to go with the assignment.

  3. Preparation for Orientations:
  4. All orientations are tailored to the specific needs of each class. Orientations can be scheduled for 60 or 75 minutes and usually are conducted in the Library’s electronic classroom, where 24 workstations allow for "hands-on" searching. For large classes, or for situations needing intensive use of print materials, Room107A&B provides ample workspace and is wired for live demonstrations of the online resources. More than one session may be scheduled per class.

Ideally, the orientation should occur two to three weeks before the due date of the completed assignment, although we recommend that you schedule your orientation as early in the semester as possible. At the very least, we librarians need a week’s notice in order to prepare for your class.

Prior to the orientation, the librarian to whom the session is assigned will contact you to discuss plans for the orientation and to clarify issues. When time allows, prior to the orientation, he/she can visit your class to talk to the students about their own expectations and needs. Additionally, there are various classroom assessment techniques that could be used with your students.

Library Orientation request forms are available at the Reference Desk or you may contact Barbara Lawrence (x6763 or blawrence@chabotcollege.edu), who coordinates the scheduling of orientations. (Remember, we do need at least one week’s notice).

  5. Participation in Orientations:

Your presence during the orientation is very important, not only for insurance purposes, but—much more importantly—to enrich the session with your own thoughts, ideas, and suggestions, and perhaps to ask the questions your students may be too shy to ask. The information will be much more relevant to your students if you jump in and relate it to what’s been happening in the classroom and to the assignment.
