Do you write at home and print at Chabot?

Students saving documents at home in applications that are not compatible with the applications here (i.e. Claris Works or WordPerfect) can still save, open, and print their documents at Chabot. Here are three ways to do this:

1. Any document can be saved in Rich Text Format (RTF). Go to File/Save As/Save as type (and then choose Rich Text Format). RTF will save text as well any formatting. Documents can be saved on a disk that you can bring in. You can also save on your hard drive and then *email it to yourself and open your email here. Save in Rich Text Format whenever possible.

2. Copy the TEXT of the document to an email and *email it to yourself. (This method does not require you to save in RTF.) That way you can open the email, copy, and then paste the text into an MS Word file for editing and printing. It is important not to send the document as an attachment in Works or WordPerfect format as an attachment from these applications will not be able to be opened at Chabot.

3. Open your own Yahoo Briefcase. To go through the process of obtaining a FREE Briefcase takes about 5-10 minutes. The account lasts forever. This briefcase allows an individual to save up to 30 MB - the equivalent of about 3 floppies. Using briefcase will keep you from having to carry a disk. Briefcase is VERY convenient though it takes a little effort up front to open an account. http://briefcase.yahoo.com/

These three tips should help. *One note about emailing to yourself...it shouldn't matter too much if it is a traditional "web-based" email account anymore. AOL or Earthlink as well as Yahoo, Hotmail or MSN can be accessed anywhere.
