Subject Headings

Civil Liberties--Use Civil Rights

Sometimes instead of searching by keywords, you may have better luck finding materials by consulting the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).  This is important because you can sometimes get better search results.  For example, articles, books, and web sites on Civil Liberties will usually be indexed under “Civil Rights."  To browse such headings, they are in the five thick red volumes on the left side of the reference desk.  For Mass Media issues, examples include—

Journalism—Objectivity       Journalism Ethics       Television Journalists       Mass Media—Political Aspects       Mass Media--Ownership

Library Subscription Databases: http://www.chabotcollege.edu/Library/abby/dblist.htmlTo find articles related to your topic that originally appeared in magazines, journals, and newspapers.  Originally published in print form.

News Sites on the Web  Please begin at our News and Current Events Page for reliable news web sites, selected by librarians—

Otherwise be very careful of even “popular” news web resources—as many of them will publish unverified stories and simply rumours, very easily.  For example—Drudge Report, Raw Story, and even some (though not all) of the results retrieved from Google News often come from questionable news resources.   For more on the Web, turn to the last page of this handout.

Finding Viewpoints

Library Subscription Databases: Viewpoints Only

  • Ebsco Host Academic Search Elite
Ebsco Host contains lots of editorials and opinion articles.  There is a way to find them using this technique:  When getting into Academic Search Elite, on one of the search bars, enter your search terms in the top bar, then on the second bar, enter the following command-- Editorial OR opinion.  Will give you mainly articles expressing a columnist's own personal (and often also expert) viewpoints.

EbscoHost Search window--User types in on separate subject lines. "Iraq" is typed in the first line. "george w. bush" is typed in the second line. "opinion OR editorial" is typed in the third line.

ProQuest Diversity Databases
The United States' alternative presses often contain stories expressing all sorts of viewpoints.  Combine your search terms with "Opinion" or "Editorial" to better focus your search.  (Example: Iraq policy AND opinion)

Lexis-Nexis Academic
Search hundreds of newspapers, television news transcripts, magazines and more!  When entering your search, include the word "Editorial" as one of your search terms ("Opinion" is usually not necessary if you search in Quick News Search.  Editorials, regardless of labeling are already so marked in this database)

Lexis-Nexis Academic World
Search newspapers around the world by selecting a regional area of the world at "Step Two" of the search form, entering the word "Editorial" as one of your search terms, and then entering your other search terms, selecting date range, and then clicking on "Search."

Magazines and Newspapers that Generally Have a Viewpoint

Below is a list of magazines that have a politically slanted theme.  Click on the titles of the magazines to then browse or search for topics.  When you click on the title of the magazine, most often it will take you into the index of the title available through Ebsco Host or Lexis-Nexis.  The separate web link stated on the right goes to the magazine's publicly accessible web site.  Keep in mind that full text of all printed sources will usually only be found in the library subscription database, while the web site may have web-only features.  In Lexis-Nexis, you must click on Search This Title, first, perform s earch, and then look at your results related to your chosen publication.  (Note: The title below is only a selection and NOT complete.  More titles from right/left/ and in-between are available in the databases listed right above)

BLOGS

Blogs are web diaries.  Anyone with the proper software can create one.  Political blogs, however, have become a hot new resource, and they can be quite good, as long as you remember that the site is founded by one particular person (or group of persons) who is hosting that site.  A blog can certainly have a definite bias and can sometimes vary in quality, especially when looking at the posts from the general public who respond to the public or who have the option to post additional diaries.  Blogs are valuable because they can sometimes give very fresh and fruitful points of view from the general population who are passionate with their beliefs.  Furthermore, many bloggers will link to news stories that may not always be easily retrievable by a regular search engine.

DailyKos and RealClearPolitics are two such blogs.

More recently, well-renowned political pundits have begun providing blogs such as the Huffingtonpost by Arianna Huffington.

Google has developed a BlogSearch that now allows users to search across the thousands of blogs that are now in existence.
