LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM
Chabot College Library organizes its collection by the Library of Congress Classification (LC) System, the way academic libraries usually organize their collections. This system differs from Dewey, the way that public libraries organize their collections. It also means that works of fiction and biographies are not placed in a separate category but are found within the LC orgranization. The best way to go about finding books is not by browsing the shelves, but by searching the Library Catalog. Write down the call numbers of books you find, and then browse the shelves. Many books that may fit more than one subject area will only be placed in one area. You could easily miss a relevant book if all you did was browse the shelves. However, the following sites below will lead you to a legend of the classification system. The handout you can print out and take with you and the web site leads to more detail of the system, itself.
