Metasearch Engines: Copernic.http://www.copernic.com/. Copernic is actually a software program you keep on your local computer. But it is worth downloading the free program. It automatically searches the search engines for you, brings you back summaries and as you continue to search on the same subject, will automatically delete any dead links. It stores your past searches so any new searches you perform only captures web sites not retrieved as of yet. It's an excellent search tool to have at hand whenever you plan to search repeatedly. Help Screen for Downloading: http://www.copernic.com/products/copernic/basic/installation-help.shtml. To run Copernic successfully, you need to have at least Netscape 3 or Internet Explorer 3 and at least a Windows 95 platform. In Internet Guides.
Metasearch Engines: Dogpile.http://www.dogpile.com/. One of the established metasearch engines, Dogpile searches over a dozen search engines including AltaVista, Direct Hit, Google, GoTo, Looksmart, Lycos, and Yahoo! The search results list the search engine, followed by up to the first ten results, followed by the next search engine and its first ten results. Whenever there are more than ten, you can click the link "Next set of results" which will then lead you into the individual search engine itself listing the next set of results. Note: Keep in mind that the first ten results do not necessarily mean the most relevant. As it does list the first ten for each search engine, there is definitely the potential of the same site to be listed more than once. Also searches newsgroups, image files, audio files, and FTP files. Dogpile searches Overture, a paid listings service. Help Screen: http://www.dogpile.com/t/help/topics. In Internet Guides.
Metasearch Engines: Ixquick.http://www.ixquick.com/. Ixquick searches a dozen search engines including AltaVista, Fast Search, Excite, HotBot, GoTo and Yahoo. What makes Ixquick powerful is that it has the ability to translate your search syntax to the appropriate search syntax for each search engine. So unlike most metasearch engines, you can actually perform more precise searches with ease. In Ixquick, you can search the web, newsgroups, mp3 files (audio), and pictures. Ixquick returns results fast by searching in the first ten results listed of all its search engines. Following the name of each result is a star rating. Each star indicates one of the first ten listed from each search engine. For example, a web site that has twelve stars has been in the first ten sites listed of twelve search engines. Also, some results are followed by a link below to other pages that contain your search terms at the same site. Note: Keep in mind that the first ten results do NOT always guarantee relevancy. Ixquick searches Overture, a paid listings services as part of its results. In Internet Guides.
Metasearch Engines: Metacrawler.http://www.metacrawler.com/index_power.html. One of the premiere metasearch engines, Metacrawler searches a dozen search engines including About, Alta Vista, Direct Hit, Excite, Google, GoTo, Look Smart, and Lycos. Metacrawler works pretty fast. Use the selections below "Any," "All," or "Phrase" before clicking on the Search button. The pull down menu below the search engine also allows you to search directories, audio files, image files, newsgroups, and auctions. You can limit your search by domains (particular regions of the world or types of web sites) by using the pull down menu under "Domain/Origin." If you want Metacrawler to spend more time searching all the search engines, (thus being more thorough), change the settings of the "Speed/Time out" pull down menu. Metacrawler searches Overture, a paid listings service. In Internet Guides.
Metasearch Engines: Profusion.http://www.profusion.com/. Now owned by Intelliseek, Profusion searches About, AltaVista, Encyclopedia Britannica, Direct Hit, Excite, GoTo, Looksmart, and Yahoo! One unique feature is the pull down menu on the lower right that says "Check Links" Select "Yes" and it will automatically check all the links of your results and only deliver those that are currently active. Profusion searches Overture, a paid listings service. Help Screen: http://info.intelliseek.com/help.htm. In Internet Guides.
Metasearch Engines: Search.com (Formerly Savvy Search). http://www.search.com/. any terms you'd also like to search and they'll appear in your search
statement. Click the "Search" icon on the top of the page and Surfwax

Search Engines, Directories: About (Formerly Mining Co.). http://www.about.com/. Sites A-Z: http://a-zlist.about.com/index.htm. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines, Directories: Looksmart. http://www.looksmart.com/. Looksmart is a directory that currently claims to have indexed two million web sites (comparable to Yahoo!), has over 250,000 categories, and has at least a staff of professional editors/taxonomists of over 200. By default, the search engine automatically searches for EVERY word entered. Its search engine does NOT permit + or - symbols. After it leads you to categories first, then subcategories, and then indexed listings (like Yahoo!), Looksmart then launches a search in AltaVista. Looksmart now requires paid inclusion for all new commercial web sites it indexes. Keep in mind that Featured listings are really Sponsored listings (i.e. paid for inclusion) and that they are listed FIRST in your results list. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines, Directories: Oingo. http://www.oingo.com. The company that introduced Open Directory, Oingo now provides its own interface to Netscape's Open Directory Project. What is unique is that it also provides you a "meaning based search engine." Enter your subject terms into that search engine and Oingo will lead you to the established subject terms and taxonomies Oingo has created. Click on the subject headings and Oingo will lead you to the list of web sites grouped by Open Directory. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines, Directories: Open Directory. http://dmoz.org/. Ambitious to double its size of indexed entries compared to Yahoo by December, 2001, the Open Directory Project grows rapidly due to the work of its staff of more than 28,000 volunteers, who are basically anyone who in their free voluntary time continues to search the web and add as each person sees fit a new listing to each category. The advantages to this approach is that more of the web is reviewed and then grouped into categories at a much faster rate than Yahoo! The drawback to this approach is that definite terminologies will likely be less controlled compared to Yahoo! Also, the web sites that are being indexed and selected are done by nonprofessionals-- not by information scientists, librarians, or academics. Open Directory is owned by Netscape. Help Screen: http://dmoz.org/searchguide.html. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines, Directories: WWW Virtual Library. http://www.vlib.org/. "A distributed catalog by subject. The oldest directory on the World Wide Web, begun by Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the Web. Maintained by experts or interested others in each field. Quality varies, some excellent, others not" (lii) In addition to browsing by main category, you can also browse alphabetically for each individual metasite of the 308 that are currently available. A search engine is available at the bottom of the screen. Help Screen: http://vl.bwh.harvard.edu/htdig/search.html. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines, Directories: Yahoo!. http://www.yahoo.com. One of the first directories, Yahoo! was launched in 1994. Yahoo! provides a carefully crafted index--courtesy of its staff of around 100 well-trained indexers/editors, many who have backgrounds in computer, information, or library science. The index is set up into a hierarchical and categorical system that allows you to browse web sites grouped by topics. The terminologies used are carefully controlled, with consistent categories and subcategories so you can begin your search by clicking on the links of broad terms which will then lead you to a list of narrower terms, and eventually to web sites, themsleves. When you use Yahoo's search engine, it first looks up terms used in its categorical index, then particular web sites that Yahoo indexes-- before launching a search in Google's databases (Note: Yahoo! does not search ALL of Google!). If the search engine leads you to a list of sites and one is relevant and preceded by Yahoo's subject vocabulary, click on the subject vocabulary to see if you find other related sites to your topic. Yahoo! is still considered to be the largest directory, with approximately 1.8 million web sites indexed. The down side is that the criteria for selection is not academically focused. For a great majority of the sites it indexes (more than 90%), Yahoo selects sites that are submitted by registration. Only a small portion of submissions will become indexed, based on the approval of Yahoo!'s editors. Currently, the waiting time for a web site to be approved is currently around a year. Some web sites are indexed sooner based on a two hundred dollar fee the client is willing to pay to hasten the approval process. A very small portion of sites (less than 10%) are selected from web searches Yahoo! staff members do on their own. Yahoo! now contains sponsored links, including capturing the first five listings from Overture (formerly known as GoTo.com. Help Screen: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/dir/. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines, Invisible Web: Complete Planet. http://www.completeplanet.com/index.asp. Claiming to find what they call the "Deep Web," Complete Planet leads you to thousands of databases that search the web on specialized subjects. When using the search engine, keep in mind that you are looking for words that exist in the name of the databases and their descriptions, not words in the web pages, themselves. You'll want to use the search engine as the directory is mediocre. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines, Invisible Web: Direct Search. http://www.freepint.com/gary/direct.htm. Compiled by Gary Price from George Washington University, this guide provides you to sources that are considered to be part of the "Invisible Web"-- those sources that search engines cannot pick up because they are embedded in a subject specific database or are in the form of .pdf or postscript files. Scroll down halfway down the page to get to the main categories. A search engine is available at the bottom of the page. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines, Invisible Web: Invisible Web. http://www.invisibleweb.com/. Claiming to find web sites the other search engines and directories cannot find, Invisible Web indexes thousands of databases (often with specific subject focuses) available on the Web. The "search engine" appears to not search words in the text of pages and relies only on Invisible Web's subject indexing. Your searches may prove to be more fruitful if you browse the directory and select a relevant database, first. Help Screen: If only connects to home page of Invisible Web, click on "Help" tab on upper right. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines, Invisible Web: Invisible-Web.net. http://invisible-web.net/. Compiled by Gary Price and Chris Sherman, this is an excellent directory to selected "Invisible Web" resources-- sources that search engines cannot pick up. The first stop for finding such resources, you first select a main category, THEN you select subcategories, each appearing as a new submenu listed below the main menu above. Eventually, a list of sites will appear below the series of menus. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines, Invisible Web: Search.com (Formerly Savvy Search). http://www.search.com/. A different kind of metasearch engine, Search.com searches over 700 databases, including those belonging to specialized topics. If you only want to search databases only dedicated to a specific subject, select one of the categories below. Of the major search engines, Search.com searches About, AltaVista, Argus Clearinghouse, Encyclopedia Britannica, Direct Hit, Excite, Infoseek, Inktomi (Hotbot), Looksmart, Lycos, Open Directory, and Yahoo! Help Screen: http://www.search.com/help/index.html. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines. See also Metasearch Engines; Portals.
Search Engines: Ask Jeeves. http://www.askjeeves.com. Ask Jeeves is more of a directory than a search engine. To search Ask Jeeves you enter a natural language query such as "What was the date the Declaration of Independence was signed?" The results lead to links that state actual questions that come closest to the one you entered. These links usually lead to one particular site. If it cannot find an answer, it then leads to results from several different search engines. While thinking this may lead you to a good web site, keep in mind: Ask Jeeves does sometimes charge companies money to have their sites listed to answer these questions. Ask Jeeves is one of four major search engines/web directories that sell their main listings. Other search engines and directories list related advertisements for a fee, but they are outside the main listings. Help Screen: http://www.askjeeves.com/docs/help/. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines: Best Search Tools. http://www.lii.org/search/file/searchtools. Librarians pick what they consider the best search tools. Click search, and a new window will open up into the search engine or directory with the search already performed. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines: Findspot. http://www.findspot.com. A tutorial on how to search the Web. Click on the name of the search engine and Findspot will provide you with the search syntax for the most basic types of search strategies. In the yellow box on the right, Findspot gives further tips of searching in that particular search engine. Enter your search statement, click search and a new window will open up into the search engine or directory with the search already performed. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines: Google. http://www.google.com. This search engine has a ranking system based on how often pages are linked by other pages, bettering the chances of getting the most popular sites, and often those with better quality, towards the top of the list of results. Google also provides its results fast and captures a rather good portion of the Web. It is currently building a directory, based on the Open Directory Project. By default, Google searches for EVERY word entered into the field. Google also saves a copy of each web page it finds, which is very useful if a web page is currently not connecting. Click on "Cached" (next to the URL of each result) to look at the saved page. For searching ANY word add OR (both letters in caps) between your terms. This search engine currently does not accept complex search syntaxes. Sponsored links are indicated in the blue box in the search results. Help Screen: http://www.google.com/help/index.html. Full Text Index currently captures 730 million web sites. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines: Hotbot. http://hotbot.lycos.com/. Formerly owned by Wired magazine and now owned by Lycos, Hotbot is one of the premiere search engines, famous for using the excellent Inktomi database, and using pull down menus to help you sharpen your search. On the left frame (in the green), select the pull down menus to limit your search and how you want your results represented. The first page of results lists pages that users have clicked from Hotbot most often. Hotbot also contains a directory (right frame), courtesy of Lycos. Note: Click here for new developments concerning Inktomi which now is guaranteeing inclusion in its listings for a fee. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines: Maxbot (SearchEdu, SearchGov, SearchMil, SearchEbooks). http://www.maxbot.com. Maxbot has different search engines, each one limited by different domains that are not commercial (.edu, .gov, .mil) or leads you to specialized formats you may not find by an ordinary search engine (ebooks). Click on one of the desired categories on Maxbot's page or go to http://www.searchedu.com, http://www.searchgov.com, http://www.searchmil.com, or http://www.searchebooks.com. The most popular links are listed first, bettering the chances of quality and relevancy. Like Google, Maxbot keeps saved versions of the web pages it indexes. So if the connection to the web page is down or seems changed, click on the "Cached" link next to the web page description. No estimates of number of web sites searched currently available. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines: Overture (Formerly GoTo.Com). http://www.overture.com. Overture is a directory and search engine that sells its main listings. Companies pay money to be placed higher in the search results. Overture argues this practice guarantees better relevancy, but you be the judge, especially when you want to find educational, non-profit organizational, and government web sites. Instead of leading you through a sequence of hierarchies, Overture immediately leads you to results. Its categories are listed on the left side of the results which you can then browse. The Overture database is now retrieved by these actual defunct search engines and directories: Excite, Webcrawler, Go, NBCi. It is also retrieved from practically all metasearch engines. Yahoo! lists the first three to five results from Overture in its results list (labeled as "Sponsored Links"). Help Screen: http://www.goto.com/d/about/howto/usht_search.jhtml. In Internet Guides.

Search Engines: Alta Vista. http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?pg=ps. One of the premiere search engines, Alta Vista can find a significant portion of the Web. By default, Alta Vista automatically searches for ANY word entered, meaning a search for Chabot College Library would find any web page that has EITHER Chabot, College, or Library. So surround phrases with quotation marks ("Chabot College Library") or place the "+" sign before words (+chabot +library). Alta Vista contains separate search forms for searching image, audio, and video files. For faster searches, Alta Vista provides Raging Search, without the directories, advertisements, and portals. Its home page provides a directory, courtesy of Looksmart, and contains links to shopping, entertainment, and news. Help Screen: http://help.altavista.com/search/search_help. Full Text Index currently captures 346 million web sites. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines.: Lycos. http://www.lycos.com. An established search engine that has gone through significant changes throughout the years. Currently, its regular search engine only searches a small portion of the web, while its advanced search engine is merely an interface to Fast Search. Its directory is mainly Open Directory's listings combined with Invisible Web's listings. Help Screen: http://www.lycos.com/help/. Its advanced search engine, which is Fast Search, searches a Full Text Index that captures 552 million web sites. In Internet Guides.
Search Engines: Yahoo!. http://search.yahoo.com/search/options. Look under Web Directories/Indexes. What the "search engine" (database) actually does is lead you to categories, sub categories and then web sites indexed by Yahoo, first,, before using Google to find results not indexed in Yahoo! Help Screen: http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch. Yahoo! indexes 1.8 million. By adding Google in the mix, it captures 730 to 732 million. In Internet Guides.
