1. Your first goal should be to complete any preparatory course work which will help you meet the program's requirements. This could include basic mathematics, algebra, chemistry and/or biology. You may also need preparatory work in collegiate reading and/or writing. See your Counselor to discuss your skills and courses.
2. Complete as many of the General Education (G.E.) requirements for the AA Degree as possible before applying to the Nursing Program. You will have little time to complete these courses once accepted into the program. Many applicants finish their general education entirely before beginning the nursing course work in the program. The specific general education courses needed by the Nursing Program are summarized below.
3. Recommended additional classes you can take to enrich your education are Medical Terminology(Health 51A), Health Care Provider CPR (N70B) or Life-Span Psychology (Psyc 12).
3. Earn strong grades, especially in science, behavioral science and communication courses. GPA minimums are used in calculating those eligible for the selection pool. Grades of "C" cannot be repeated unless you have some extenuating circumstances. See your Counselor to discuss this issue.
It is strongly recommended that you successfully complete English 1A or the equivalent prior to entry into the program. English 1A is used in part to determine eligibility for the applicant pool.
It is also strongly recommended that you complete as many of the General Education requirements as you can prior to entry in the Chabot Nursing Program.
The nursing theory and concurrent clinical experiences are such that the student can anticipate being in class or in the hospital/agency setting from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. This means that the only times you can enroll in general education courses that you have not taken is in the summer session or in the evening. Most nursing students find that the heavy commitment to studying and preparing for the nursing courses make it necessary to study in the evening. Furthermore, some clinical experiences may require an evening assignment, making it difficult, if not impossible to enroll in an evening class

Physical Education: Completion of one unit of physical education is required for all students who are seeking the A.A. Degree. Exemption is allowed for illness or physical disability by filing a physician's statement at the Admissions and Records Office. Students who hold an A.A. Degree or higher are also exempt.
You must complete all Natural Science courses prior to entry to the nursing program. It is recommended that these courses be as recent as possible.
Note: Biology 31 and Chemistry 30A are required if you complete the above Natural Science courses at Chabot or Las Positas Colleges.
Other curriculum requirements mandated by the California Board of Registered Nursing include the following required courses:
Completing the other curriculum required courses prior to entry to the Nursing Program will help in the first semester of the program, because you will be taking courses in nursing that focus on the aging person, communication skills, critical thinking, and foundational work in psychology.
Student who hold an AA/AS Degree or higher are exempt. Exemption is allowed for illness or physical disability. You must file a "Request for Course Substitution or Waiver", available in the Counseling Office. You will need a physician's statement. See a counselor for assistance.
