Blackboard Tips

Pasting Text from Word:
Need to paste from a Word document? When copy/pasting from a Word document into Blackboard, unwanted font or html is often included, which can cause display issues. To prevent display issues, use the "Paste From Word" tool, available under the last icon in the Text Box Editor.

Opening Office Files in Blackboard:
For those of you inputting Microsoft Office files into Blackboard, you might have noticed a problem opening these files if you or your students are using the Internet Explorer browser. While using IE, you get confronted with a login screen that makes you click multiple times before the file opens.

If your course has Office files, a workaround is to use a different browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari) since the problem only occurs with IE. Converting Office files to PDFs -- which also helps for accessibility purposes -- also solves the problem.

Email a Copy of your Announcement:
To email a copy of your announcement text, use the Send Email feature (under Course Tools). You can Copy the text of the Announcement and Paste it into the text box to send a copy of your Announcement to your students.

Download a Copy of the Grade Center:
To download a copy of your Grade Center into Excel, go to the Grade Center (Full Grade Center) and in the top, right corner, click on "Work Offline" and select "Download." On the next page, leave the options to their defaults and click Submit. You will be prompted that the data has been saved. You can then click the "Download" button to choose to Open the file (in Excel) or Save the file.

Set External Links to Open in a New Window:
When you add a link to a webpage outside of Blackboard, it is a good idea to set it to open in a new browser window. This ensures greater accessibility and function of the outside website. When creating your links, either with the "Create External Link" function or through the "Hyperlink" icon in the Text Box Editor, make sure to select the option to "Open in a New Window."
