Blackboard Upgrade
Blackboard may look a little different when you access it for the first time this term. There was a minor system upgrade that took place on January 8, 2014. Blackboard was upgraded from Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 9 to Blackboard 9.1 Service Pack 13. While this was not a major upgrade, it includes some new features and fixes from Service Packs 10, 11, 12, and 13. Details and video demonstrations of new functions can be found at http://www.chabotcollege.edu/OnlineTeaching/Blackboard/upgrades/.

One of these new features is Profiles. A profile is a reflection of how you want to present yourself to other users in the Chabot Blackboard system (much like in a social network like Facebook and LinkedIn). A profile is not the same as your Blackboard user account. In your profile, you can upload an image, you decide what you want to be called, what your academic interests are, and anything else you want to share with other users.

Note that when you first set up your profile, you are automatically prompted to provide a primary email for your profile. Note that entering an email address for Profiles does not change your email address used for Blackboard, it is simply used for ID verification. For steps to change your Blackboard email address visit http://www.chabotcollege.edu/online/zone/#ChangeEmailforBb

You may want to share the above segment on Profiles with your students, as well as the link to the steps for changing the email address they use for Blackboard.

Blackboard Support for Students
f you have students who need assistance with Blackboard or an online/hybrid course, please direct them to the Online Learning website at  http://www.chabotcollege.edu/online where they can submit a help request online.

Online Learning Student Support also offers an opportunity for students to drop-in to the Online Services lab (downstairs in 700, Room 709) to get in-person assistance on their online learning needs with an Online Learning Student Assistant. Working with an experienced online student, students can get assistance on a range of topics, including logging into Blackboard and a one-on-one online learning orientation which will help students to get started with their online/hybrid course. Current hours for this in-person service are listed at http://www.chabotcollege.edu/online/DropIn/ .

If you are looking to teach an online/hybrid course in the Summer or Fall 2014, there is a short approval process that should be completed in Spring 2014. For more information and how to get started, visit http://www.chabotcollege.edu/cool/process/.

In the Spring 2014 semester, the COOL plans to continue their efforts to clarify the schedule information for online/hybrid classes and further streamline the online/hybrid course approval process, including a reformatted Online/Hybrid Course Proposal form. The COOL meets on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month, 12-1pm in room 1506.

Remember to make your Blackboard site Available to Students.

In order for your students to be able to access your Blackboard sites, you will first need to make the site available.
Steps to make your Blackboard site available

Worried that students are not receiving the emails you send through Blackboard?

Remind students that the default email address listed for their Blackboard account is their Chabot-provided Zonemail email address. If students would like to use a different email address for Blackboard, they can change their Blackboard email address through CLASS-Web. Click here for full instructions.

Use the Firefox or Chrome Browser (instead of Internet Explorer):

To help minimize errors, please be sure to access Blackboard using either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome (rather than Internet Explorer). While all three of these browsers will function with Blackboard, we've had a number of issues reported from users of Internet Explorer. These issues are resolved by using Firefox or Chrome whenever you access Blackboard.

Request your Blackboard Sites

If you haven't already done so, you can request Blackboard sites at any time in the semester.  Steps for Requesting Blackboard Sites
After you request your sites they will appear in your Blackboard account usually within 24 hours.
