Online Teaching & Learning and Blackboard at Chabot College.

Reminder: Blackboard Upgrade on Mon. 1/11/16
The next
Blackboard upgrade will
take place on Monday, January 11, 2016, starting at 5pm
until approximately 8am on Tuesday. The site will be
unavailable to everyone during that time.
Blackboard will be upgraded from the Blackboard 9.1 April 2014 release
to the October 2014 release. While this is not a major
upgrade, it includes some changes to the Blackboard
Collaborate web conferencing tool (the interface is much
cleaner and users won’t have to download and install
Java-reliant files in order to use the tool). Also, the spell check
feature is fixed to check spelling as you type.
Blackboard Support for Students
As you introduce Blackboard to your students, please use the
Get Started with Blackboard handout, which includes steps to
log in, change your password, and update your email address.
Feel free to attach this file to your Syllabus or distribute to
your classes as needed.
If you have students who need assistance with Blackboard or an
online/hybrid course, please direct them to the Online Learning
website at
http://www.chabotcollege.edu/online where they can submit a
help request online. The Online Learning website provides
students a wealth of information and resources, including steps
for logging into Blackboard and using common tools within
Blackboard, steps for setting up a preferred email account for
Blackboard, as well as a self-paced Orientation to Online
Learning. The orientation consists of video demonstrations and
step-by-step instructions, as well as tips for student success
with online learning.
Online Learning Student Support also offers an opportunity for
students to drop-in to get in-person assistance on their online
learning needs with an Online Learning Student Assistant.
Working with an experienced online student, students can ask for
assistance on a range of topics, including logging into
Blackboard and getting started with their online/hybrid course.
Hours and location are listed at
http://www.chabotcollege.edu/online/DropIn/.
Also, please remind students that the default email address
listed for their Blackboard account is their Chabot-provided
Zonemail email address. If students would like to use a
different email address for Blackboard, they can change their
Blackboard email address through CLASS-Web.

View your Blackboard Site from a Student Perspective The "Student Preview" mode takes the place of a Fake Student
account. To go into Student Preview mode, simply click on the
rotating arrows + circle icon in the upper-right-hand corner of
the Blackboard page (in screenshot).

You can use this Student Preview mode to view your course site
from the student perspective at any time while logged in using
your regular instructor account. When you enter Student Preview
mode, the student preview bar appears at the top of every page.
The bar displays the text "Student Preview mode is ON" and has
Settings and Exit Preview functions easily accessible.
If you go into Student Preview mode and then Exit Student
Preview mode, it will give you the option to “Keep the preview
user and all data.” Selecting this option will keep the Preview
User account active and make it so that you can log into that
account separately (Example: Joe Chabot would have a Preview
Account Username: jchabot_PreviewUser. The password will be the
same password as your instructor account).
Highlights from the
Planning on teaching in online/or hybrid delivery format Summer 2016
or later? Please visit the Committee On Online Learning (COOL)
website
www.chabotcollege.edu/cool for an overview of the Online/Hybrid
Course Delivery Proposal Process, including links to the current
proposal form. The web-based proposal form, piloted during the fall,
allows for easy sharing with subdivision colleagues. A tentative
deadline (pending COOL approval) for initial submission of proposals
will be Tuesday, February 16th at noon. Faculty
submitting their first proposal to the COOL will also be required to
conduct a course site demonstration/review towards the end of the
semester.
You'll note that the first component in the process is your
own skills development and research. If you are planning to teach
your proposed course using Blackboard and have never taught with
Blackboard before, please be sure to check out
the resources for
Getting Started with Blackboard.

 Blackboard Tips
Request your Spring 2016 Blackboard Sites:
Chabot instructors can use Blackboard for on-campus,
hybrid, or online courses. Request sites by logging into
CLASS-Web, click on the Menu
for Faculty, Staff & Advisors, scroll down to the Blackboard
Course Site Request link, and get started by selecting the
semester and campus.
New to Blackboard? Getting Started:
If you are new to Blackboard at Chabot, requesting sites in
CLASS-Web will create your Blackboard account and you will
be contacted directly with your log in information. For more
information, view resources for
Getting Started with Blackboard.
Copy Over Course Content from an Existing Site:
Instead of re-creating content for your Spring 2016 sites, easily
copy over the content from a previous site using
these simple steps (the Course Copy tool).
When Will Students be Able to Access My Sites?
Students will be uploaded to the Blackboard system about one
week prior to the first day of the semester. Once students
are uploaded to the system, you will still need to
make your course site available in order for students to
access it. Use the same steps to make old course sites
unavailable.

Assistant, or another Instructor Access to Your Course Site?
