Springboard to Transfer

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any special requirements for entering the program?

Anyone who is eligible for the level of English being offered can enroll in that semester. No special permissions or applications are required. All you need to do is register for the program's linked courses.

Can I just enroll in one of the courses and not the other?

The courses in Springboard to Transfer are formally linked to each other, and the assignments in one course will be connected to the assignments in the other course(s). This means that you must enroll in the block of courses each semester, rather than just a single course.

Do I have to commit to all three semesters?

You register for one semester at a time. Because of the advantages of learning communities, we expect that many students will choose to continue in the program for more than one semester. In fact, 90% of the students who passed English 102 in Fall 2005 enrolled in Springboard again the following semester. Nevertheless, the decision is yours to make.

I didn't start in Semester 1 -- can I join the program in Semester 2, or Semester 3?

Enrollment in the program's linked courses opens up each semester, so you can enter Springboard at any point along the way as long as you are eligible for the English course being offered that semester.

What about math classes?

Math isn't formally included in Springboard. What most students do is figure out which level of math they need to take and then find a section that fits well with their Springboard schedule.

Will these courses count toward my transfer requirements?

In determining which courses to include in Springboard to Transfer, we try to select courses that will work for the most common majors and the most common colleges/universities to which Chabot students transfer. All of the general education courses in the program must be IGETC courses which fulfill lower-division general education requirements in both the UC and CSU systems. To be absolutely certain that Springboard courses will work for your individual major and transfer plans, check with a Chabot counselor. http://www.chabotcollege.edu/Counseling/

I took English 101A -- can I be part of Springboard's English 102?

Yes. English 102 is a one-semester combination of 101A/101B. This means that anyone who is not yet eligible for English 1A can take English 102. The course is appropriate for people who have never taken English 101A or 101B, for people who have taken 101A (whether they passed or not), AND for people who have taken but not yet passed 101B. The next Springboard sections of English 102 will be offered in Spring 2008.

How do I register?

Students are divided into 6 groups of 14-15 students, and there are several schedules to choose from. Click on the link called "Courses" (see left) and pick the schedule that best fits your other school, work, and family obligations. When registering, you will need CRN numbers for both/all the classes in the group you choose, so make sure you write them down. You should also write down the CRN numbers for a second group, in case your first choice is full. If you have problems registering, contact Dr. Katie Hern (khern@chabotcollege.edu, 510-723-7424) or Ms. Tram Vo-Kumamoto (tvokumamoto@chabotcollege.edu, 510-723-7512).
