One Monday-Friday, June 20-24 Class Descriptions1st Period – 9-10:30 a.m.Sign Language Through games and activities, you’ll get your first glimpse at a whole new way of expressing yourself. You will learn the American Sign Language alphabet so you can form your own words and find out how to sign subjects like pets, food, family members, numbers, sports, and colors. You will enhance your learning through a number of hands-on activities like making masks and family scrapbooks, playing games, and enjoying "snack day." Handouts will be included so you can keep practicing at home and teach your friends and family! Instructor: Tessa Harris TV Production: Put on a Show! Learn the ropes of television production both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. In Chabot’s real-life Channel 27 television studio, you’ll learn everything: Be the cameraperson, work the controls, write the stories, roll the teleprompter, interview the celebrities, BE the celebrity! Everyone will get a chance to perform every role as you put on a news show with sports, weather, news, interviews, and more! Each student will get a DVD of the class projects to take home. (Parents must sign a release form.) Instructor: Tom Lothian, Chabot TV instructor *Edible Science Combine yummy cooking lessons with the basic principles of physics and chemistry and what do you get? A fun, hands-on class where you can eat the conclusions! Make ice cream in a bag, whipped cream, fizzing candy, and edible landfill with dirt (crushed oreos) and worms (the gummy kind). Be prepared for funny smells, yucky textures, and some gross grub. You’ll keep a personal journal of your experiments and discoveries! Instructor: Vicky Haney *Cartooning: Monsters & Critters Whether it’s a graceful unicorn, a slithering dragon or a more modern beast, we have been telling stories of fanciful creatures of all sorts since the beginning of time. This class will feature lessons on drawing classic beasties, the structure and construction of four- legged animals, and designing original creatures as well as a technique for presenting a final drawing. Instructor: Brian Kolm Flash Animation Ever wonder how animation like Pokemon and The Simpsons are made and wish you could create your own characters? Come and find out how a simple sketch can turn into an animated object. You’ll take home a CD of your work to impress your family and friends! Note: Suggested for kids with some computer knowledge, preferable using an art program, like Paint. Instructor: Jenny Arnaiz 2nd Period – 10:45-12:15 a.m. Digital Photography If you have a digital camera and want tips on how to take great photos, take this class! Each day you will travel around campus and in and out of the classrooms as you learn and practice different photo techniques, like portraits, landscape, close-ups, moving objects, and more from an award-winning freelance photographer. By the end of the week, you’ll have a great set of photos to be proud of. And to remind you of your camp experience, we will print out your favorite photo to put in a frame that you’ll make and take home. Must bring a digital camera. Instructor: Sean Jones "Glee" Performance Are you a Gleek? Do you watch Glee every Tuesday night and wish you were as talented as Rachel, Finn, Puck, Quinn and the rest of the crowd from McKinley High? Then take this fun class! During the course of a week, you’ll work as a team to perform a scene in which the Glee Club prepares to compete in Sectionals. You’ll act, sing, and dance as if you were in the real show. It’s a great opportunity to develop confidence, express yourself, and make friends. You’ll perform for friends and family on the big stage on the last day! Instructor: Vicky Haney Fun with Spanish Learn to speak Spanish in just one week! Well, at least you can learn the highlights to carry on a simple conversation and order food in a restaurant with ease. You’ll learn typical Spanish phrases, days of the week, greetings, and numbers, and specific words to describe some of the games and activities you’ll be participating in. Find out the names of food items and have a snack of fresh tortillas and salsa. You’ll also learn about the richness of the Hispanic culture. Instructor: Liana Snider *LEGO Engineering Do you like to build things? Are you interested in how things work? Or do you just love having fun with LEGOSŪ? Kids on Campus is proud to partner with Play-Well TEKnologies to bring you this exciting, fun-filled camp offering engineering and architectural programs using LEGOSŪ. We provide the LEGOSŪ (more than 100,000 pieces!) and you provide the imagination. You’ll explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, and architecture while playing with your favorite creations. Campers will work in teams as they are given instruction and design challenges and will perform in age-appropriate competitions. Come and join the fun! Instructor: Play-Well Staff Hip Hop Dance #1 Learn the hottest dance moves of today from an experienced dancer instructor and choreographer who performed on So You Think You Can Dance. You’ll try all the latest techniques and styles such as popping and krumping while keeping the beat to the most popular music of today. At the end of the week, you will perform on the big stage for your friends and family! No previous experience needed. Wear tennis or soft-soled shoes. Take one or both weeks—there will be a different dance each week. Instructor: Chuck Rodriguez 3rd Period – 10:45-12:15 a.m. *Fashion Design Want to create some awesome designs that are individual to your own personal taste? Take this class and use a variety of materials to turn your favorite clothes into a reflection of your own creativity. You will use lots of different materials–fabric paint, glitter, sequins, ribbon, buttons, and more–to turn your ordinary jeans, t-shirts, flip-flops, backpacks, hats or whatever you want into a personalized, one-of-a-kind creation. This class is for girls AND boys who want to stand out in a crowd. Instructor: Kamal Ragbotra GarageBand Did you know there is a music production studio called GarageBand built right into Macintosh computers? Enter Chabot’s state-of-the-art Music Computer Lab and you’ll find out how to create your own music just by using a keyboard! You’ll learn step-by-step how to set up and start a music session, import and play software instruments, write your own songs, and save projects as Podcasts or ringtones. You’ll bring home your own music on a CD or an MP3. On the last day, you’ll present a concert of all the projects to your family and friends. Instructor: William Shannon, Chabot Music Instructor *Paint Like Picasso Or like Andy Warhol…or Van Gogh...or Georgia O’Keefe...and other famous artists. In this fun and inspiring art class, you’ll create your own works of art based on the styles of the artists who made them famous. Plus, you’ll learn fascinating facts about the artists themselves. You’ll create your own geometric-style of Picasso’s cubism, make an Andy Warhol pop art masterpiece, paint the visible strokes of Van Gogh’s Impressionism, experience the Pointillism style of Seurat, and appreciate nature as you paint like O’Keefe. Make your own contribution to the art world! Instructor: Liana Snider *Sloppy Science If you like science, take this class…but be prepared to get your hands dirty with a bunch of experiments that will streeeeeetch, EXPLODE!!, bounce, burst, and possibly splat! Create an oozing batch of slime, participate in an egg-drop competition (yes, it can be messy!), create giant bubbles, observe mile-high explosions, and experience much more! And while you’re doing the experiments, you’ll learn the basic chemistry and physics concepts that make this hands-on approach so much fun. Instructor: Vicky Haney Summer Olympics: Track Prepare for the 2012 summer Olympics! You’ll compete in track and field events and aim for the gold medal! You’ll do conditioning exercises and then go out on the track to compete in running metered races, doing high, long, and triple jumps, and competing in Chabot’s own version of a triathalon. You’ll be in great shape by the end of the week and be ready to head to London next summer! Instructor: James Jackson, Chabot Assistant Track Coach * indicates a $10 supply fee
