Class Descriptions

1st Period – 9-10:30 a.m.

Math (3rd-4th grades)

Learn math by running your own business—a Lemonade Stand!—and see how much money you can make! You’ll have complete control over every part of your business, including pricing, purchasing the ingredients, making the lemonade, and customer service. (You can sell cookies, too!) You’ll make flyers and signs and invite the other campers and the Chabot employees to buy your delicious lemonade! At the end of the camp, the class will donate its profits to a favorite charity. Emily Santiago.

Math (5th-6th grades)

Numbers are everywhere! We see them when we watch sports, when we buy new clothes, and definitely when we’re in school. So, what do all those numbers mean? In "Numbers Galore," we’ll take a look at different types of numbers (whole numbers, fractions, percents, and more) and what to do with them (multiply or divide them, use them to measure, or figure out a variable.) We’ll learn fun ways to remember how to work with numbers, and use awesome websites — like BrainPOP — and exciting games. Take this class to keep your math skills up over the summer! Instructor: Katie Hirstein

Math (7th-8th grades)

Have fun practicing your math skills through puzzles, games, and creative play as we explore concepts from algebra, probability and statistics. You’ll also get to know your classmates by interviewing them and putting their information into graphs. Find out how fun math can be! Instructor: Lauren Woll

*Cartooning: Star Wars Art

This class will help you to create your own space characters by learning to first draw characters from the Star Wars universe. You’ll learn how to construct figures with 3D shapes and find out how to draw facial expressions, costumes, and action poses. Then you’ll take those new skills and knowledge and use it to create characters that are all your own! Instructor: Brian Kolm

Drama Workshop

Popular instructor Vicky Haney will help you discover the wonder and magic of acting through theater games, storytelling, creative movement, and imagination. If you think you are too shy to come to a theater class, she will guarantee that you won’t be shy when you leave! You’ll make new friends as you work closely together to rehearse the skits that you’ll perform for your guests on the big stage on the last day of class. Instructor: Vicky Haney.

2nd Period – 10:45-12:15 a.m.

Language Arts (3rd-4th grades)

Have you ever wondered who writes the news stories and creates the ads that get into the newspaper? Now you can find out and be a journalist yourself for the week! You’ll interview classmates, create advertisements, write about camp events, make up funny fictional news, and create a newspaper online. Instructor: Emily Santiago

Language Arts (5th-6th grades)

Put some pizazz in your writing by learning to get creative with adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases. In this "Wake Up Your Writing" class, you’ll learn how to organize your thoughts and write a cohesive paragraph, brush up on the basics of grammar and punctuation, and then work towards making our writing excellent. We’ll increase our vocabulary by learning prefixes, suffixes, and roots. We’ll use interactive websites, fun games, and other activities to help us become better writers. Instructor: Katie Hirstein

Language Arts (7th-8th grades)

Get ready to write! Tweet a haiku, spin a story, become a biographer! In this class, we’ll learn about the different kinds of writing, including poetry, prose, fiction, and non-fiction. Write non-fiction biographies about your classmates by interviewing them and finding out about their exciting lives, make up your own adventures to write fiction, and tweet a haiku or other form of poetry to your friends! Instructor: Lauren Woll

*Edible Art

Grab your apron, imagination, and creativity and join us for this fun class where playing with your food is encouraged! You will transform ordinary foods into tasty, no-bake masterpieces! Each day you will learn about an art technique and create edible art inspired by that method. You will build an edible bird’s nest, make graham cracker mosaics, sculpt a veggie creature, make peanut butter and cereal landscapes, paint bread, and more! Explore the tasty world of edible art! Instructor: Vicky Haney

Hip Hop Dance #2

Learn the hottest dance moves of today from an experienced dancer instructor and choreographer who performed on So You Think You Can Dance. You’ll try all the latest techniques and styles such as popping and krumping while keeping the beat to the most popular music of today. At the end of the week, you will perform on the big stage for your friends and family! No previous experience needed. Wear tennis or soft-soled shoes. Take one or both weeks—there will be a different dance each week. Instructor: Chuck Rodriguez

3rd Period – 10:45-12:15 a.m.

*Project Runway

Learn from a real fashion designer how professionals develop and create original designs and styles—and then try it yourself! You’ll learn various sewing, measuring, cutting, and design techniques to make it happen! You’ll sketch your own designs and transform an ordinary t-shirt you’ll bring to class into a high-fashion shirt or skirt by using a variety of materials. You will learn to handstitch, but a sewing machine will be available if you know how to use it. Model your designs for your friends and family on the last day of class! Instructor: Kamal Ragbotra

*Gladiator Games

Have you ever imagined what it was like to live under the Roman Empire? Put on your toga and say "salve!" You’ll find out what that means (a common greeting during that period) and learn other Latin words while having fun reliving those days. We’ll explore the gladiator’s arena, build "war machines" with the Empire’s legions, make armor for protection, and experience Roman-style games. You’ll learn about the Roman emperors, decide which one you want to be, then prepare to face real situations where you have to decide how to defend yourself. It’s all in fun but you’ll learn a lot at the same time! Instructor: Lauren Woll

*Wacky & Wild Weather

Did you know that there are 2,000 thunderstorms occurring on Earth every minute? And that there are millions of earthquakes every year? Come to Wild & Wacky Weather, where you’ll learn about all sorts of weather and natural disasters. We’ll talk about how wild, wacky, and sometimes scary things happen, like tsunamis and hurricanes, and then do experiments to show what we’ve learned. We’ll make our own whirlpools and try to build earthquake safe "buildings" and we’ll practice using thermometers, barometers, and rain gauges. If you’re interested in all things weather, then come join us as we learn about exciting weather phenomena. Instructor: Katie Hirstein

*The Breakfast Club

Is there anything better than the smell of bacon and eggs as you wake up in the morning? Now you can learn how to make delicious and nutritious breakfasts for yourself and your families that go beyond the everyday morning fare! How about waffles with strawberries and whipped cream; chocolate chip pancakes, scrambled egg burritos, fruit crepes, cinnamony french toast, and homemade granola? You’ll get all the recipes to take home. And you don’t have to wait until Mother’s Day to make them! Instructor: Vicki Haney

Sports of all Sorts

Spend the last period of each week of camp getting out all of your extra energy. You’ll play gameslike kickball, whiffle ball, and soccer, along with Capture the Flag, Ultimate Frisbee, and games of your choice you may want to share with others. If it gets really hot out, we’ve been known to have a water balloon toss to keep cool! James Jackson, Chabot Assistant Track Coach
