(entering 3rd-4th grades)In “Build It,” you’ll participate in hands-on construction activities like building a newspaper bridge with an emphasis on geometrics and other math challenges. Instructor: Emily Santiago Camp #350056 M-F, July 13-17, 9-10:30 a.m. Elementary Math II: Geometry Genius (entering 5th-6th grades) In “Ace Algebra,” you’ll learn how amazingly simple algebra can be be with fun games like Math Jeopardy and group projects and activities. Become a pro at everything algebra: expressions, algebraic equations, variables, functions, and more. Instructor: Katie Hirstein Camp #350059 M-F, July 13-17, 9-10:30 a.m. Middle School Math: Exciting Equations (entering 7th-8th grades) Through games and activities, you will review the basic definitions of numbers (integers, rational, real, prime, etc.), brush up on the order of operations and how to combine like terms, review simple methods for solving equations, and do activities based on graphs, as well as the number line coordinate system. Worksheets based on each day’s work will be taken home each day. Camp #350062 M-F, July 13-17, 9-10:30 a.m. Musical Theater: “Grease” We’ll head back in time to the 1950s at Rydell High to perform a scene from the show “Grease,” the always-popular musical in which Sandy and Danny are surprised to see each other again after a romantic summer vacation. Whether you play a black-jacketed “T-Bird” greaser or one of the Pink Ladies, it will be a great show! Learn the lyrics (age appropriate) and choreography for scenes like “Summer Nights” and “Greased Lightning.” Perform for your friends and family in the Little Theater. Instructor: Vicky Haney Camp #350051 M-F, July 13-17, 9-10:30 a.m. Flash Animation: Give Life to Your Cartoons! Ever wonder how animations like Pokemon and The Simpsons are made? Come and find out how a simple sketch can turn into an animated object as we learn the very basics of Adobe Flash software. You’ll start by creating your own virtual aquarium with swimming fish and moving bubbles. You can even find out how to put in your favorite soundtrack so your fish will swim to music! You’ll also get a DVD of it to take home and show your friends. Note: Suggested for ages 10+ with some computer knowledge, preferably using an art program, like Paint. You will learn the American Sign Language alphabet so you can form your own words and find out how to sign subjects like pets, food, family members, numbers, sports, and colors. You will enhance your learning through a number of hands-on activities like making masks and family scrapbooks, playing games, and enjoying “snack day.” Hand-outs will be included so you can keep practicing at home and teach your friends and family! We’ll learn to get the most out of our books by discussing the theme, main events, plot, and tone. We’ll have small book clubs to begin some of the wonderful books that are out there today. Be a part of the Kids On Campus Weekly News. Develop your skills as you divide up your “news team” to take photos of classes and lunchtime activities; interview fellow campers, instructors, and counselors—and even the president of Chabot College! You’ll write your own news, headlines, features, sports stories, even movie reviews. You’ll put it all together online in the Spectator newsroom, and have your own online (and printed) newsletter to show your friends, family, and fellow campers! Learn how to draw all of your favorite cartoon characters or action figures and even create some of your own! You will learn basic cartooning techniques for drawing heads, bodies, hands, feet, expressions, and backgrounds and we’ll talk about the different places cartoons are used. You will see how “flip books” are created and you’ll sketch original creations to take home. Instructor: Kevin Maier (creator of the front and back covers of this catalog!) Materials Fee: $10 Camp #350048 M-F, July 13-17, 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. CSI: Chabot Mystery #1 Become a super science detective! Learn about forensics, crime scene investigation, and crime lab chemistry as you perform experiments designed to help you solve a campus crime. You’ll search for evidence, gather clues, and discover how science can help solve a mystery! Dust for fingerprints, examine hair fibers, test for blood type and find DNA using simulated blood. It’s a tricky case—but somebody has to solve it! (Take Weeks 2 & 3 and solve different crimes!) Instructor: Carey Kopay, Chabot biology faculty Materials fee: $10 Camp #350091 M-F, July 13-17, 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Lunch & Activities 12:15 -1:30 p.m.3rd period 1:30-3 p.m.Project Runway IExpress your fashion ideas and understand the design process in this exciting class! Learn from a real fashion designer how professionals develop and create original designs and styles. You’ll sketch your own designs and work with a variety of fabrics to construct fashion accessories. Bring a plain t-shirt and transform it into a high-fashion design using scissors, needle and thread (or a sewing machine we’ll have), buttons, ribbons and other materials. We’ll have a fashion show on the last day! (Take this class for both Weeks 2 and 3 and create all-new designs!) Instructor: Kamal Ragbotra Materials Fee: $10 Camp #350067 M-F, July 13-17, 1:30-3 p.m. Shocks & Sparks Exciting experiments with electricity and magnets will definitely spark your interest as we find out how they affect us in our everyday life. Find out about the pull of magnetic forces and see the near magic of magnets attracting and repelling as we play with magnetic fields. We’ll build a working electrical model, play with balloons to learn about static electricity, and find out how electricity really works. You’ll be shocked at what you find out! Develop and expand your individual and team skills through a series of fun drills that will make you become a better basketball player. Boys and girls will focus on different areas of the game: offense, defense, dribbling, shooting, and passing, in addition to team play and strategy. Students will be divided into appropriate levels. Let your imagination go wild as you discover the possibilities of turning unwanted items into masterpieces. Create entire cities and people using everyday items like paper towel holders, water bottles, and juice boxes. Use recycled items to make a creative sculpture! We’ll have lots to choose from or start collecting your own stuff to bring in. You’ll need a shoebox and several photographs for a special project. Learn how using recycled materials not only saves the environment but can be fun! There will be awards for the most creative, funniest, scariest, and more! Instructor: Vicky Haney Camp #350047 M-F, July 13-17, 1:30-3 p.m. Fun with Drums Are you ready for the beat? Experience drumming in a truly multicultural way. You’ll learn traditional and contemporary styles of music from the Congo, Nigeria, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, and other countries, and learn about the culture that keeps it alive today! You’ll learn to play hand drums (congas, ngomas, and djembe) and other percussion instruments (bells, shakers, and sticks) in a group and also be taught how to move and sing to the rhythm. Each day will end with a “jam session.” The instructor will bring instruments but invites campers to bring their own as well. Students will perform together on the last day. Instructor: Sue Kaye Camp #350064 M-F, July 13-17, 1:30-3 p.m. Baking for Kids II: Sweets & Snacks It’s time to put on your chef’s hat and learn to bake! On each day, you will learn to make something scrumptious—and then enjoy it! You’ll make sweets like cookies and cupcakes and cinnamon buns, snacks like make-your-own pizzas and pretzels with various toppings, and much more! You’ll also create your own individual cookbook which will include all of the recipes plus your own creative flair! (There will be different recipes in Weeks 1 & 2 so take both classes!) Besides learning the basics of baking, you’ll learn about kitchen tools and equipment and safety in the kitchen.
