Minutes
- Rick asked the committee to review the minutes of the last meeting and to
send corrections to Minta.
- Rick confirmed that he and Scott are planning on attending the Curriculum
Committee next week, so the committee needs to finalize proposed changes at
this meeting.
- Jan passed out a 1-page document, "DE Committee Vision/Goals" for future
discussion.
- Committee decided that the DECSC meetings for the semester will be held on
the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month, room to-be-announced, depending on
focus of meeting. Rick asked faculty committee members to volunteer to
demonstrate one of their online courses during specified meetings:
- September 20th: "cleanup" meeting to finalize goals.
- October 4th: Desmond Chun will demonstrate his online course. Room may be
3902 - Desmond will check.
- October 18th: Scott Hildreth (pending) will demonstrate his online course.
- November 1st: Jan Novak will demonstrate her online course.
- November 15th: Discussion on pedagogy
- December 6th: Spokesgroup on requirements (?) or support services (?)
- General discussion on new focus of the committee. Questions, comments, and
suggestions included:
- How do we motivate faculty to be interested in online teaching?
- The process needs to be streamlined.
- How do you qualify what determines an effective online course?
- Use an evaluation process with measurable data.
- What about a supervisory process for each division?
- Eliminate unnecessary paperwork (currently 18 pages of forms).
- Take out any DE proposal for which the instructor has had another course
approved.
- What determines a hybrid? 50%? Some hybrid courses require several
meetings, while others only require a few.
- What about faculty who have taught online at other colleges?
- Faculty who have taught at other colleges still need to be familiar with
the support services, process, etc.
- What about deans who want to quickly add more online courses?
- How about a "bypass" sheet for faculty who have already been approved to
teach online?
- What about faculty who taught DE at Chabot many years ago, and come back
to teach the same course, but the technology, resources, policies, and
procedures have changed?
- Proposals.
- Scott moved to approve all of Jan's proposals, as well as all the other
experienced DE faculty listed on the sheet Jan had passed out, titled
"Anticipated DE Courses," which also included courses proposed by Dmitriy
Kalyagin, Jas Banghal, Wanda Wong, Desmond Chun, and Wayne Philips (Minta
will post these to the list of proposals
as they come in). Committee voted to approve all proposals; however, Wayne
Philips will need to submit proposals for the online courses, as all of his
previously approved courses were hybrids.
- Proposed changes to the DE Curriculum Process.
