Attendees:
Jan Novak (chair), Des Chun, Gene Groppetti, Scott Hildreth, Michael Langdon, Judy O?Toole, Andrew
Pierson, Lisa Ulibarri.
Final Student Evaluation Forms for Online Instruction:
Jan led a discussion about finalizing the online evaluation student survey. The
key concern regarding online evaluations is how to administer the form to gain
significant student response and maintain confidentiality. Scott expressed his
difficulty in getting all students to complete the evaluations in his pilot
program this semester.
The ideal way to obtain student feedback appears to be to set up a shadow course
in Blackboard for each instructor to be evaluated in a given semester. That
course would contain only the feedback survey, and the evaluator would be the
instructor for that course. A Blackboard announcement would be made in the
course to be evaluated, directing students to this shadow course to complete the
survey. This would be an easy option for students, as they could complete the
survey while logged into Blackboard in a format that is familiar. This would
also allow the evaluator to identify students who do not complete the evaluation
form and to follow up with them to request their participation. The district has
indicated support for this concept in contract negotiations. The committee
favored the idea and agreed it was work in progress through next semester.
Budget items:
Laptops ? Jan discussed the possibility of online instructors receiving laptops
with Tom Clark, Dean of Applied Technology & Business. One possibility from this
discussion was that instructors could either have a desktop or a laptop
computer, but not both. Tom was open to further discussion about the
configuration of that laptop, and that it may be possible to include docking
stations, monitors and keyboards for on-campus use.
Jan led a discussion she had with Lynn Sandoval to develop an online student
orientation course and an online faculty training program. After researching the
idea, Las Positas agreed to allow us to use their online faculty training
program at no cost to Chabot. @One has also agreed to provide us with a no cost
license to use their 4-week Online Teaching with Blackboard course. The
potential cost to Chabot for an existing, apparently high quality online student
orientation course is $1,000. We?ve requested the syllabus and other materials
to assess the suitability of this course for our students. Scott suggested we
obtain the programs and provide stipends to faculty to ?Chabotitize? to fit our
needs. Jan agreed to include these items in the budget request.
Spring Approval Status:
Teri Barton, Lynn Sandoval, and Jim Baum are not yet approved.
Judy reported she could not find Lynn on BOLT and has not heard from Teri. Judy
agreed to follow-up with Lynn and Jan will follow-up with Teri.
Des reported Jim Baum is 60-70% ready to go. Des agreed to obtain further
clarification from Jim regarding the status of his course.
Jan also reminded committee members to complete their BOLT course proposal
reviews for 5 additional courses: Kuwabara, Kalyagin, Novak, Benkman, and
Phillips.
DE Program Review ? Potential Rocks:
The review and unit plan are due by December 15, 2006.
Jan has completed the Basic Data Analysis and Rocks 1 & 2.
Rock 3 (student retention) is to be explored by Scott and Lisa.
Rock 4 (faculty barriers) is to be explored by Hilal, Michael, and Judy.
New inquiry area (student learning) is to be explored by Gene and Michael.
Committee members agreed to complete their outstanding rocks and submit to Jan
no later than December 13.
Student Film about Online Learning:
The student filmmakers who developed the reading film are available to help us
with an online learning film that supports our ?Rock #1? inquiry. The filmmakers
requested that we identify 8-10 online instructors who would agree to
participate in this film project. Each student in these instructors? courses
would be asked to write a 1-2 page essay about their experience of online
instruction. Filmmakers will read the essays, and formulate interview questions
based on their learning from the essays. Scott and Michael agreed to ask their
students to write essays. Scott suggested he and Jan use their current students
for the project as well. A set of questions will be provided to the students for
a guide. Andrew, Wanda, and Jan will identify and contact instructors to
participate in this project for spring semester, and will lead the project.
