Chabot Community College

Committee on Online Learning
Minutes for Meeting: November 3, 2009

Attendees: Ramona Silver(chair), Richard Dinwiddie, Julian Prentice, Lani Wilson, , Jan Novak, Michael Langdon & Minta Winsor.

1) Online Tutoring FIG: The COOL have decided to implement both the Online Tutoring FIG and a small Pilot program in the Spring 2010 semester. To facilitate the FIG and the Pilot, Michael Langdon from Language Arts has graciously taken leadership for this project. The first step, is for Michael with the help of the COOL members, to revise the previous Online Tutoring FIG proposal, including a budget with a timeline, and resubmit it to the Title III coordinator, Patricia Shannon. To that end Michael Langdon and Ramona (Chair) are meeting on Thursday November 12, 2009 at 11:00AM to begin the revision process.
It was proposed that we do a pilot for 2 types of courses; 1 from English and 1 from the Social Sciences. We then plan to expand the pilot in the Fall of 2010 to include more disciplines and also to expand the pilots, if possible, in the Spring 2011 semester.

2). The committee discussed the current online and hybrid proposals from this Fall 2009 semester. In reference to Susan Tong and Julie Machado's Student Success 3 online courses for PACE, several members of the COOL were concerned about how the course would actually be implemented. Ramona Silver has reviewed the Course Outline for those courses and submitted them to the Review Team and it has been determined that the course should proceed to the demo phase of the COOL protocols.
Also Jan Novak suggested that to facilitate our review process to the demo stage, the Chair , should contact the other review teams and check in to see if they had any concerns regarding the proposals that they reviewed.
NOTE: The week of November 9-13, 2009 Ramona Silver received replies from all review teams and most of the courses meet the approval of our review teams. However, the chair will check one last time in regard to approvals at the November 17 meeting.

3). The committee discussed how best to implement the @ONE incentive money to encourage fellow faculty to participate in the @ONE Winter Institute offered at the new year located at Cosumnes River College, Sacramento, CA, January 12-14, 2010. The committee determined that we would offer each faculty member who chose to participate a reimbursement for their registration fee for the workshop/session of their choice. Additionally we decided to be sure to inform faculty that this would fulfill their variable unit Flex Day obligations. Ramona Silver subsequently consulted Tom Clark, Dean of Business and Technology to confirm that this was indeed appropriate. Ramona Silver distributed the announcement to the faculty on Tuesday November 12, 2009.

4). Demo Workshop Debriefing: Ramona Silver informed the committee that she held a Demo Workshop and that 3 people attended and an additional faculty member received the handouts and also some e-mail instruction. For the workshop Lisa Ulibarri set up course shells in advance to "jump-start" the process. Then, Ramona implemented a basic course menu format and 2 basic handouts to make the course demonstration development process quicker. The three faculty who attended informed Ramona Silver that it was very helpful. Ramona Silver hopes to do another workshop on quick tips for use of the Discussion Board very soon.

Next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday November 17, 2009 at Noon in Room 1506!
