Minutes for Meeting: September 1, 2009


Attendees: Ramona Silver(chair), Kathleen Allen, Bob Buell, Des Chun, Richard Dinwiddie, Aldrian Estepa, Scott Hildreth, Michael Langdon, Julian Prentice, Randi Ray, Lisa Ulibarri, Lani Wilson, Minta Winsor.

1). The Committee welcomed its newest member, Julian Prentice from the Library who is taking Norman Buchwald's place this Fall 09 semester while Norman is on sabbatical leave.

2). Proposal Status from Spring 09:

a)Rob Leadbeater has successfully completed his demo and will do the formative evaluation with Lisa on Thursday 9/3.

3). Discussion about upcoming Webinar in reference to the Stimulus Bill HR 3221 for Community Colleges sponsored by the AACC:

a). Scott HIldreth suggested some important questions: i.Does this money apply to all online classes including G.E. requirements and transfer classes? ii.Can this money be used for new course development? Can this money be used to teach and faclitate online learning/instruction for collegues?

b). Lisa Ulibarri further commented that we need several levels of Basic Skills courses online.

(Ramona Silver attended the Webinar and will have the responses to questions and also further information on HR 3221.)

4). Implementing Online Learning throughout the College:

a).Ramona Silver suggested that we may want to try a new twist on presenting Online/Hybrid course development in order to reach more reticent fellow colleagues from disciplines like Art, Theatre Arts, and others. Her suggestion was something like "Brain Surgery Online".

b). However Scott Hildreth and Michael Langdon suggested instead that if we do an introduction/presentation to Blackboard 9 to encourage colleagues in disciplines like Art, Theatre Arts, Math, these colleagues may consider using it as a bridge to developing online/hybrid courses in the future.

c). A Discussion ensued on when we should offer an initial presentation on Blackboard 9. The committee tentatively considered the possibility of November for this presentation with the hope that in the Spring we could again try presentations/workshops on Online/Hybrid courses for these kinds of disciplines.

5). Lani Wilson discussed the need for the committee to address accountability and student to instructor interaction.

6). In regard to the Online Tutoring FIG. Michael Langdon has not yet received a reply from Prof. Shannon regarding funds from TITLE III. (Ramona will e-mail her to follow up on the status of this proposal.)

7). Discussion on aiding faculty with VODCASTS: Ramona suggested that we may want to using the Chabot T.V. Station and Sujoy Sarkar to do some vodcasts with online faculty.

a)Scott Hildreth and the committee suggested that it may be better to begin by setting up a meeting with Cristina Moon and Connie Telles, Sujoy Sarkar and Gary Carter to discuss the possibility for a limited test program.

8). Lani Wilson stated that CCSF is no longer accepting transfer students.

9). Discussion on actual Student Success in Online Classes as opposed to simply retaining students

a). Scott Hildreth asked that the committee brainstorm regarding useful ideas for helping students be successful while also figuring out methods for determining who will be successful.

10). Ramona Silver suggested to those committee members present that we hold a COOL meeting on September 29, 2009 because we will lose the meeting originally scheduled on October 6, 2009--for Flex Day. Those present all agreed.

Next COOL meeting will be on September 15, 2009 at 12:00PM in Room 1506!
