Minutes for Meeting: February 2, 2010

(Attendees: Ramona Silver(chair),Kathleen Allen, Bob Buell, Norman Buchwald, Desmond Chun,Tom Clark, Richard Dinwiddie, Jerry Egusa, Aldrian Estepa, Michael, Langdon,Jan Novak, Julian Prentice, Lisa Ulibarri, Lani Wilson, Minta Winsor, Wanda Wong and Sherri Yeager.)

1). Follow up on our two course demonstrations from last semester. Connie Telles is scheduled for Wednesday February 17, 2010 and Sadie Ashraf is scheduled for Wednesday February 10, 2010.

2). Tram Vo-Kumamoto, Dean of Science and Mathematics Division, sent a request regarding the status of three courses that had originally been telecourses but were now actually Hybrids. The committeee determined that the three course instructors should only submit a written proposal by March 1, 2010.

3). In reference to several of the COOL Spring semeseter goals, the Chair discussed the idea of implementing a Blog in place of a traditional paper news letter for the COOL. The Chair met with Abdullah and went over the steps to build one. She will be showing different designs to the committee in the next two meetings. The Chair also presented an list of potential Authentic Assessment tips. However, the COOL determined that the tips would not work in classes that require a more objective type of assessment. The Chair will do more research and present a different list at the next meeting. Jan Novak also suggested that we implement the Blog feature in Blackboard Learn on BOLT in the Summer and Fall.

4). Minta Winsor gave the COOL an update on the status of Streaming Video. Palomar is parternering with Edustream and this will provide free uploading of content to all California Community Colleges. Copyrights are protected. However, before it can be implemented they are awaiting Board approval.

5). The Chair discussed the need for examples that illustrate contact hours from different disciplines. Both Sherri Yeager and Aldrian Estepa graciously offered to help with those. The Chair will present an new version of our Contact Hour explanation for COOL Review in April.

6). The COOL voted to hold their meetings in the new IOB Building. This will not occur unitl the March 16, 2010 meeting.

Next Meeting is Scheduled for Tuesday February 16, 2010 at Noon in Room 1506!
