Committee on Online Learning
Minutes for Meeting: January 19, 2010

(Attendees: Ramona Silver(chair), Bob Buell, Norman Buchwald, Tom Clark, Richard Dinwiddie, Mary Dermody, Jerry Egusa, Aldrian Estepa, Scott Hildreth, Michael, Langdon,Jan Novak, Julian Prentice, Wanda Wong and Sherri Yeager.)

1).  With great joy, the COOL welcomed two new members to our committee: Sheri Yeager and Jerry Egusa. The COOL also welcomed back Norman Buchwald who has returned from his sabatical.

2).  The committee discussed the previous uncompleted course demonstrations from Fall 2009.  Connie Telles and Sadie Ashraf will need to complete their course demonstrations this Spring 2010 semester.  Aldrian Estepa is the leader for Review Team A, and he will make arrangements for Professor Telles to do her demonstration.  Ramona Silver (Chair), is the leader for Review Team B and she has contacted Professor Ashraf and is making arrangements now for the course demonstration.

3). The committee suggested that we may want to use a different meeting room because of logistics.  The chair is going to look into obtaining a new room in the IOB building and will discuss this again at the next meeting.

4.  The commttee discussed the proposal addendum defining Contact Hours and made suggestions to the Chair regarding improving it for more clarity.  The Chair amended the Contact Hour explanation and submitted it as an addendum with the Spring 2010 proposal form.  The Chair also uploaded it to the COOL web site.

5).  The committee discussed the Goal list that the members composed at the last meeting December 1, 2009.  The Chair invited open discussion regarding which things we wanted to pursue and which things we wanted to defer.  The committee focussed on the following points: a) We want to work at offering better Authentic Assessment ideas in online learning to our colleagues as a way of encouragement.  The committee also suggested that we may want to offer weekly Online Authentic Assesment tips to the college.  The Chair stated that she would come up with a tentative list for review.  b).  The committee discussed the importance of emphasizing in some way the Green part of online learning, perhaps through offering a workshop or even in an Online News Letter theme.  c). The committee discussed the importance of using more advanced technology, i.e., streaming video to make online learning more accessible to our student body.  d). The Chair discussed the importance of amending our COOL website to make it more streamlined and exciting.

6). The committee discussed further our goals of making online learning accessible and attractive to our colleagues through emphasizing during Flex Day the new improvements and features in Blackboard 9.
