Committee on Online Learning

Minutes for Meeting: March 2, 2010

(Attendees: Ramona Silver(chair), Kathleen Allen, Norman Buchwald Bob Buell, , Tom Clark, Richard Dinwiddie, Mary Dermody, Jerry Egusa, Scott Hildreth, Jan Novak, Kathleen Lisa Ulibarri, Wanda Wong and Sherri Yeager.)

1). The Chair informed the committee that they needed to submit their feedback for the first set of proposals on BOLT by Monday, March 8, 2010. Additionally, Mary Dermond, Wanda Wong and Jan Novak offered the suggestion that it is perfectly fine to offer positive feedback. If the proposal looks good we should simply state that fact.

2). The committee discussed the plans submitted to us from Dave Foquet for Distance Learning classrooms in buildings 1700 and 1800. Scott Hildreth graciously offered to present the background on the project to the COOL members. The committee have been asked to provide recommendations for these rooms in regard to type of equipment, whether they are flat or tired or sloped. Additionally the committee has been asked to consider how these rooms can be best used. Scott Hildreth emphasized that One of the more significant aspects to the planning of these rooms, is that we have the rare opportunity to think ahead about how education will look in the future. The possibilities are that we can sue these rooms to do team teaching with Las Positas instructors, tele conferencing to anywhere in the world, to broadcast and receive, to do lecture capture as smart rooms. Scott Hildreth suggested that we take a look at what some other institutions are doing and he offered to submit that information to us. Tom Clark suggested that we have a control room and to consult MASS Com. Mary Dermody suggested using these also for Community Programs. Bob Buell emphasized the shape of the rooms should be different; one sloped, one flat, to meet different needs. Finally, Scott Hildreth informed the committee that we would need to be ready to offer concrete suggestions/recommendations by May.

3). Lisa Ulibarri , presented to the committee important information regarding submission of Spring 2010 final grades and the upgrade to Blackboard 9. Lisa Ulibarri stated that we need to let our colleagues know in each division that the upgrade will begin Monday June 7, 2010 and that instructors will not have access to any grade information contained in their Blackboard course sites until the upgrade is complete. Therefore they should be sure to make note of this when they prepare their final grades. Additionally, Lisa Ulibarri and Minta Winsor are offering Blackboard 9 trainings in the next two months for faculty on several different days.

Next COOL Meeting is Scheduled for Tuesday March 16, 2010 at Noon in Room 405 in the IOB.
