Subject Directories: Commercial

Subject directories (sometimes called "Web Directories") are collections of Web sites that people have selected and organized.  Commercial ones especially contain large collections.  Yahoo! was the most famous one, though these days it is only a commercial search engine that is totally ad-driven (all listings and their placement are paid by the originator of the websites).  They discontinued their directory in 2014).  It used to appear as below.

Subject Directories have arranged selected Web sites into subject categories and sub-categories.

Sometimes links are annotated so you'll know before clicking on it what a site contains.

Many commercial subject directories also have a search engine function

The quality of sites in a commercial subject directory are often good, though most often you will have to evaluate them with as much rigor as you would find from a search engine.
