Subject Directories: Commercial

Subject directories (sometimes called "Web Directories") are collections of Web sites that people have selected and organized.  Commercial ones especially contain large collections.  Yahoo! is the most famous one, even though these days it appears to function more as a search engine while the directory still exists "behind the scenes."  The directory is still available to browse and search at http://dir.yahoo.com.  If you use Yahoo!, go to this link, instead.

Subject Directories have arranged selected Web sites into subject categories and sub-categories.

Sometimes links are annotated so you'll know before clicking on it what a site contains.

Many commercial subject directories, such as Yahoo, also have a search engine function (though the Library does not recommend searching the one at www.yahoo.com as regular listings can sometimes be paid listings with no indication).

The quality of sites in a commercial subject directory are often good, though most often you will have to evaluate them with as much rigor as you would find from a search engine.
