A Personal Message from Chabot's President to Our DREAMERS

Dear DREAMERS:

My family, like that of so many Americans, came to this country to better their lives. And like your families we have worked to contribute to America and to construct through hard work better chances for our futures. As President of Chabot College I commit my deepest support to you for your right to work and receive a college education free of anxiety, distress, and fear.

The rescinding of DACA on September 5th strikes at the heart of all of us in the Chabot community. We are pledged to resist efforts to curtail your right to respect, dignity, and to your education. Please know that I and my colleagues are working to advocate for your rights, to defend them, and to support you in all ways possible to achieve your American Dream.

As we move forward as a dedicated community of teachers and learners to do so please look for our updates at this website regarding our concerted actions.

Respectfully,

Susan Sperling, Ph.D.

President, Chabot College

A Statement Regarding DACA

On September 5th 2017, the Trump Administration formally announced it will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Since its implementation, the DACA program has provided more than 800,000 young people in the United States the opportunity to pursue their educational goals, work in their communities, and contribute to our society. President Trump’s decision to end this program is deeply distressing.

Many DACA recipients call the Bay Area home and attend Chabot College as scholars in pursuit of higher education and self-betterment. They are our peers, neighbors, and friends. They have the same yearning for academic excellence and community citizenship as the rest of the student body. The DACA program has allowed these students and community members to feel safer and more at ease as they strive to achieve their dreams.

Therefore, the Faculty Senate, Classified Senate, Student Senate, and President of Chabot College, strongly condemn this decision to end the DACA program. Furthermore, we remain committed to supporting all of our students. We will continue to provide our students and community with up-to-date information, timely and relevant resources, and advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to any administrator on campus or any member of the Chabot College Dream Team. We are all part of the Chabot community: let us stand together in the face of hate.

Serving you,

Dr. Susan Sperling
