Dear California Community College Colleagues,
We invite you to attend the Umoja III Conference on Friday and Saturday, October 12th and 13th 2007 at Chabot College.
As a community college professional, you are aware of the pressing need for programs focused on the enrollment, retention, academic success and transfer of African American students. Umoja, a community of educators and learners, has been organizing and working for nearly a year on a model statewide program focused on the retention and success of African American students. In developing this model program, we drew from the materials and experiences of nearly all the existing programs related to African American students in the state. We also aligned the program pedagogy and practices with the Best Practices in Basic Skills document that was released by the Chancellor's Office in March 2007.
The goal of this Conference is to share the comprehensive core program and resources we have developed. It is designed as a working conference to gather and incorporate feedback and insight from attendees. We need your expertise and experience as we are developing this program: even more, our students need you. We will workshop all of the Umoja program components in detail, as well as present an overview of the entire Umoja Community model. We seek to achieve consensus around the Umoja Community and to identify colleges interested in implementing Umoja. We also intend to share our interactions with the Legislature, Board of Governors, and foundations in an effort to seek sustained support.
