Assessments...

  • Enroll you in classes at your knowledge level so you won't be bored or discouraged from classes being too easy or hard.
  • Save you time and money by assessing into higher level courses and achieving your education goals faster.

Do I have to take the assessments?
Assessments are part of the Student Equity and Access (SEA) program and a mandatory matriculation step. It is also required for students who want to participate in Priority Registration and enroll into a Math and/or English course.

What assessments are offered?

  • English - Informed Course Selection
  • Math - Guided Self Placement
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) - Reading Test + Writing Sample
  • Chemistry - Chemistry Diagnostic Test

I took the assessments at another college. Can I use those results?
No, Chabot College does not accept assessment results from other colleges. Only completed course work may be transferred. (transcripts required)

Do I need an Ability to Benefit (ATB) test?
Please confirm with the Financial Aid office if you are eligible.

Taking Your Assessment


1. Prerequisites

New, First Time in College Student are required to have

  1. Already applied to Chabot College, and
  2. Completed online Orientation.

All Continuing, Returning & High School Concurrent Enrollment Students are required to have

  1. A current application for admission on file prior to assessment. Otherwise, apply to Chabot College.
  2. Completed online Orientation.

How long are the assessments?

Math: Guided Self-Placement 20 minutes (check-in at least 30 minutes before closing)
English: Informed Course Selection 20 minutes (check-in at least 30 minutes before closing)
ESL: CELSA + Writing Sample 2 hours 
Chemistry: 45 min  (check-in at least 1 hour before closing)

4. Math Guided Self Placement

 

  1. Bring a valid photo ID. Students will not be admitted without one.
  2. Know your Student # (W#).
  3. Bring your high school transcripts if available.
  4. Check-in with enough time to complete the assessments. Review test schedule.

8. After the Test

  1. Math and English placements are available immediatly 
  2. Chemistry test results are available within 24 hours. You can log into CLASS-Web to get your results online.
  3. ESL test results are available within 7 business days. You can log into CLASS-Web to get your results online.
  4. Make an appointment with a Counselor to create your SEP.
  5. Follow-up and stay in touch with counselors.
