Backing-up and Storing your Data with a PC using a U Drive

Faculty and Staff members who use a PC have their own personal area on the Chabot College network where they can store up to 20 MB of their data. This area, called the "U Drive", allows each person to store and back-up their files from anywhere on campus. The U Drive is also portable; it can be accessed from other computers on campus. Home access will be available soon. The U Drive is like any other folder on your computer - you may cut, copy, paste, drag, and drop files and folders to and from this drive.

Limitations of your U Drive

Determining your Network

Computer users at Chabot College are typically divided between two networks: a faculty network and an administrative one. On your office computer, look to the lower-right portion of the screen. For PC users, this is where a small digital clock is located. If you see the following icon: a single red letter 'N' with a gray background then you are on the administrative network. If you don't see this icon, you are on the faculty network. When accessing your U Drive from other computers on campus, confirm that you are on the same network by checking for this icon.

Accessing and Using your U Drive

  1. From your Desktop, double-click on the "My Computer" icon. The "My Computer" window opens. Look for an icon that includes your first initial, last name, and the letter "U". For example, this icon will be titled something like jmiller on '..\users' (U). This is your U Drive. If you see this icon, skip to Step 3. If you do not see this icon, go to Step 2.
  2. Save any documents that are currently open on your computer. While holding down the Ctrl and Alt keys, press the Delete key. All open programs will become hidden and a "Windows Security" dialog box will appear. Click the button labeled, Log Off… . All of your programs will close, and a white Welcome To Windows box will appear. Press the Control-Alt-Delete keys simultaneously again. The "Log On to Windows" box will appear. Enter your user name and password. From the Log on to: drop-down menu, select CHABOTCOLLEGE. Click OK. Your computer's desktop will reappear. Continue to Step 3.
  3. Double-click the U Drive icon to open it. The contents of your U drive (if any) will appear.

You may rename your U Drive to anything you want, such as "my U-drive", "Wanda's file storage", etc.

If you need assistance with your U Drive, please contact the ITS Help Desk at x6966 or send an email to Katherine Tollefsen.
