Steps for copying a Blackboard course site into another site
Once you try out the steps below for copying a
a Blackboard site, you will find it pretty straight forward. But for the first attempt, please read the detailed instructions below to ensure a smooth process. You may find it easier to print this webpage (2 pages).
You can also
click here to view a 2-minute video demo. Before completing the steps
below, please note that:
- Login to Blackboard, and click on any course you will copy content FROM.
- Go to the Control Panel.
- Under Course Options, click on Course Copy
- Click Copy Course Materials into an Existing Course. You'll then
see a screen similar to the screenshot immediately below:

- Click Browse (a pop-up window will open).
- Click Search. (no need to type anything into the search box - all
your course sites will display).

- Determine which course you want to copy TO and click Select (Select
button will be on the far right). Be sure to select the correct course and term (2006 as
opposed to 2005) to copy into.
- Select/check the boxes for each area. Important: Some items are dependent on others, so it's best to just
select all of the boxes (more
details on what each area includes - opens in a new window).
Specifically:
- If you have any tests, pools, or surveys, be sure to select "Tests,
Survey's and Pools." Selecting only the content area where the tests are
linked only copies over the links - it does not copy over the tests.
- If you have assignments (using the actual Assignment tool -
view a Flash demo),
be sure to select the content area as well
as "Gradebook Items and Settings." While you may not want all
of the Gradebook items and settings copies, unfortunately, this is the only
option. If later on you decide to copy over the assignments from within
content areas (and within folders), the assignment will become faulty, and
the administrator will have to contact Blackboard to have it removed (read
more details about this on our list of issues).
- Click Submit. The course copy usually only take a few seconds, and
you will see a page that reads "This course copy action has been
successfully queued. Before going into the course, we recommend that you
check your email to verify that the process completed"
(usually within a matter of seconds). If
you have a lot of content, the copy process may take several minutes, in
which you will have a blank screen and a status bar at the bottom of your
browser. Do not do anything to the screen until you see the "successfully
queued" notice. You will receive an email confirming that the copy was
completed.
