Timothy Harris
is Director of Instrumental Studies at Chabot College. His teaching
responsibilities include directing the Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony,
Chamber Winds and teaching applied percussion and music history. Since
his appointment, the department of music has quadrupled is size and has
grown to include five concert bands, three jazz bands, chamber music,
and a comprehensive applied lesson program. Prior to his appointment,
Harris served as a Conducting Associate at the University of North Texas
where he was a student of Eugene Migliaro Corporon. Harris graduated
Magna Cum Laude from California State University Stanislaus with a
Bachelor of Arts where he studied conducting and percussion with Dr.
Edward C. Harris and Galen Lemmon respectively. From 1999-2003 Harris
served as Director of Bands at Lodi High School where he was a two-time
honoree of Who's Who Among America's Educators and was named
“Director of the Year” by the Northern California Band Association. In
2007, Harris was awarded the Gilbert T. Freitas award by CMEA Bay
Section for “Achievement in Music Education.”
He is in constant
demand as a guest conductor and percussionist and has performed at the
Orange County Center for the Performing Arts, Smith Center for the
Performing Arts, and Carnegie Hall. As a jazz drummer Professor Harris
has performed with Jiggs Wigham, Nancy Wilson, Michael Wolff, Chuck
Findley, Matt Finders, Jon Faddis, and Pete Escovedo. Harris is
published in Teaching Music Through Performance in Band as the
author of research guides on the works of Larry Daehn, Jan Van der
Roost, Samuel Hazo, and Christopher Tucker.
Harris holds
membership in the College Band Directors National Association,
California Band Directors Association, California Orchestra Directors
Association, International Association of Jazz Education, Music
Educators National Conference, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity of
America, and California Music Educators Association where he serves as
the Band Representative for the Bay Section. |
