Many of you will have taken your prerequisite courses at a college other than Chabot. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell which courses are equivalent to Chabot’s. Here is a general guideline to help.
The required prerequisite courses for the Dental Hygiene Program are designed to also meet requirements of the Commission on Dental Accreditation. They may or may not meet the requirements at Chabot College for the Associate in Arts degree. In addition, substitute courses listed on this page may or may not meet these requirements.
At Chabot, these are our applied chemistry courses for health sciences. Chemistry 30A (Intro and Applied Chemistry) is a general inorganic chemistry course. While we feel the applied inorganic chemistry is best for persons entering the health professions, any general inorganic chemistry course could be substituted.
At Chabot, Chemistry 30B (Intro and Applied Chemistry) is a mixture of organic and biochemistry. An organic chemistry course could be substituted.
Each course must have a laboratory component.
These are distinct, separate courses at Chabot. The need for thorough education in both anatomy and physiology is essential. While it is greatly preferred that you take one full semester of anatomy and one full semester of physiology, we will accept a 2-semester sequence of a combined Anatomy – Physiology course. If you take a one semester combined anatomy and physiology class, you will be required to take a separate Physiology course.
All courses must have a laboratory component.
There is not really any substitute for microbiology. This course must be a general microbiology course, with lab, of at least 4-5 semester units. It must cover all areas of microbiology.
A general 3-semester unit speech course is required. Students should take Speech 1 (Fundamentals of Speech Communication) to satisfy this requirement. Another accepted course is Speech 30 (Elements of Speech).
A general 3-semester unit introductory psychology course is required. Students should take Psychology 1 (Intro to Psychology) to satisfy this requirement.
A general 3-semester unit introductory sociology course is required. Students should take Sociology 1 (Principles of Sociology) to satisfy this requirement.
In order to determine which course will meet the prerequisite requirements, YOU SHOULD SEE A COUNSELOR at Chabot or the college you are attending. The following table is provided to assist you in determining the courses that may satisfy the prerequisite requirements. The Dental Hygiene Program does not provide students with counseling services. Admissions questions need to be addressed by a college counselor.
