The Dental Hygiene program begins once a year in the fall (mid-August, usually) and places eighteen students into each class. Because applications received exceed this number, a point-based system is used to place students. The points are derived from overall college grade point average, grades in Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology, and residence in the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District.
Make an appointment with a Chabot counselor to talk over a plan for taking your prerequisite courses. It is normal for a student to spend 1½ to 2 years to complete program prerequisites prior to application to the program.
Students are advised to take all or most general education requirements for the Associate in Arts degree prior to starting the Dental Hygiene program (see the Chabot College catalog for the Chabot College A.A. requirements). Dental hygiene is an intensive course of study involving lecture courses, laboratories, and clinical coursework. There is little time in the two-year program for additional courses to be taken outside the dental hygiene program.
Make an appointment with a counselor to discuss which courses must be taken in addition to the Dental Hygiene courses to earn the required Associate in Arts degree.
One requirement for the Associate in Arts degree is an American Cultures course. The courses that have been designated to satisfy the American Cultures requirement are designated in the semester schedule book with an “A” before the section number. In most cases, this course will need to be taken at Chabot College.
A nutrition course (Nutrition 1: Basic Nutrition) is also a required course in the Dental Hygiene program. It is best if the student takes this course before starting the program. This is also true for Health 60: Responding to Emergencies.
